The boat pictured is a 1957 Crestliner Commodore 14 ft.; engine
shown is a 1940 Johnson model PO-15, 22 hp
I collect old outboard motors, own somewhere in excess of 150 of
the greasy things, and write a monthly "on-line" column
on the repair of old OMC outboards on a web site for home boatbuilders.

In addition to the Crestliner, I have (2) Feathercrafts, an Aerocraft-brand
boat, and have built (4) plywood boats. By the way, ultized your
Crestliner logo images to have new decals cut. Thank you for posting
that. Prior, the boat had hand-painted reproduction decals.
Following are the starting instructions from a decal
on the engine:
"1) Open gas valve and air vent. Open needle valve
one (1) turn. Place spark advance lever in center
position. Move choke lever to left. Place throttle in
half-open position. Push release charger lever all the way
to the right. Press carburetor float pin until gasoline
runs out of overflow. Wrap rope around flywheel and
pull.
2) When (if) engine starts, advance spark slightly.
push choke lever partly to the right to speed-up
motor, then push release charger lever all the way
to the left and move choke lever to "run' position.
3) After engine is warmed-up, close throttle, retard
spark lever slightly and regulate the low-speed
adjustment at top of carburetor for best low-speed results.
4) Advance spark lever and with throttle wide open,
adjust needle valve for maximum motor speed."
IMPORTANT NOTES
1) This engine is water cooled, but has no water pump;
cooling water is circulated by pressure and vacuum
from the propeller acting upon "scoops" located ahead
of and behind the propeller. It is important that the engine
be speeded-up to at least one-half throttle upon starting
in order to establish cooling water flow.
2) Due to note #1, and to the fact that this engine has no
neutral and no reverse, it is important that the boat be
pointed in the direction in which you want to go, because
when the engine starts, you are going there.
