I'm greasing the pivot on my '59 Mercury Mark 55A and the old grease (which is nasty) is only coming out the bottom. I've been gently applying heat to the swivel tube and turning it back and forth while pumping grease into the grease fitting (because I have four hands like that)
The issue is that the pivot is very stiff. I can turn it halfway easily with a six foot cheater bar. Its much more difficult to turn by hand. I've been sure to disconnect the steering cables, too.
Should I just keep doing as I am? |

| I just got it all working properly. I had to apply more heat to the swivel tube. I took apart the helm and got the steering cables all sorted out and it now works more or less like a charm. |

Glad you got it working - for old outboard questions, go to www.aomci.org and click on "ask a member". The antique outboard club has an awesome message board.
